God's Flesh and Blood

"Sally's children aren't really kin,"
her aunt argued behind Sally's back,
"because Sally was only adopted."

When Sally's two boys got their permanent teeth
the enamel was paper thin.
A specialist in Birmingham
very regularly recovers each tooth in plastic
—only delaying decay.

"Just what I told you,"
the aunt muttered to her own son,
who with good teeth sucked
his breakfast coffee;
"it's unfair that you will have to share
the limited inheritance
with rotting usurpers!"

Lest her husband blame her
for not having told until days before they married
that she had been adopted,
Sally was relieved to learn
that her sons' rare teeth
occur only when both parents' families
have committed incest.

"Good Christians must have good blood,"
the aunt muttered in disgust.
"The kind we drink at church is not enough?"
her son answered over The Tribune;
"aren't we children of God only by adoption?"
