Everett Bonds

Prison

Dear ones, I have a friend,
in that deep divide,
where prisoners are only numbers
because they've been condemned for crime.

Society doesn't know them,
since they are shut away,
but the judge is pretty sure,
they are guilty of those sins.

It seems we can't abide
of felons in our midst,
unless they have spent some time
within stone walls of mass repent.

It is now his new home,
and family can not stay,
they can't be loved or married,
or have children who would pray.

The warden will not allow
for fear that they may write,
for stamps or envelops
within stone walls of pain and fright.

I understand, society our judge,
wants those to repay their guilt.
Just how is that done, while
God is cleverly left out?

What about the guilty?
Will they ever find God's Grace?
Or will they rot behind steel bars
and never be embraced?

I know this just a test,
a test of faith and nerves,
even the Apostle Paul was condemned,
prison his new horizon.
